Welcome to DAIR
Facing the truth of Irish child sexual abuse
Dair is an organisation for adults who were sexually abused as children. With our intimates, and our allies, we are making better lives for ourselves.
Our suffering, on account of the abuse we were subjected to, was greatly exacerbated by a culture that shunned and silenced us. We were forced to suppress our fear and anger, and we became ruled by shame. When we tried to express the truth of our experiences, our voices were stifled, and we were left to deal with our experiences alone.
Dair’s raison d’être is to create a response that is the exact opposite of what adults with experience of child sexual abuse are used to. We create protective conditions where we are facilitated to find the words to express ourselves, and where we are really heard.
We do not want pity; we want to express our truth, and for it to receive ordinary respect. We want our experiences and insight to help build a culture that ends the avoidance. Thus, together with our intimates and allies, we work to throw off the shackles of trauma and face the truth of Irish child sexual abuse.
